I've used NoteTab lite for a long time, but recently thought I'd go 'open source' with Crimson. Syntax highlighting! Not had that in while! I'm missing the search wildcard feature of notetab though.

I also learned to use the horrible VI editor (pretty essential skill for anyone working in IT), by the more gentle introduction of Lemmy

For java editing, Eclipse is the only way. If you're struggling to get your eclipse project to compile, stick with it! It's worth it in the end, and going through the painful process will help you learn the way java works.
