New Announcements

News of new, newly-released, or newly-revised editors should go here, in reverse chronological order (most recent news items on top). Separate each item with a horizontal rule, and if you have time eventually add the item to the main EditorIndex.

The aoeui lightweight text editor optimized for Dvorak keyboards, and its QWERTY variant asdfg, have been released under GPLv2 at http://aoeui.sourceforge.net. Less than 64KiB? on x86, yet full Unicode support, multiple windows, code folding, tags, and more.

Mansfield Software, makers of KEDIT the PC-based XEDIT clone have announced that they will be producing a final v1.6 version as well as winding down the company. KEDIT has always had a strong user base and its solid dependability/reliability have been made a favorite of PC programmers for years.

ZpNetics? announce new commercial code editors

ZpNetics?, Inc. advertised the Dr Koder editor for some time now in Dr Dobbs magazine (stating "coming soon"). Their website (http://www.zpnetics.com) now mentions several products which are text-editor related, but Dr Koder and Dr Studio are probably the most interesting for readers of this wiki. Unfortunately the website only states that these products are coming soon, it does not yet reveal a release-date. Also no screenshots or price quotes are available yet.

Dr Koder seems to be a good featured code editor, with the usual features like configurable syntax-highlighting, advanced search/replace features, key-mapping, etc. It should also have a fully featured file manager and much more.

Dr Studio seems to be taking things a step further, including an advanced Hex editor, FTP/SSH client, script language implementation, project support, etc. See www.zpnetics.com for a full list of features.

Their website suggests trial versions will become available later. Registered versions of both products will probably be locked to the machine which was used to register the software.

I will add both products (if no one else does before me of course!) to the EditorIndex as soon as the products are released and/or evaluation versions are available.

Spammed again - image based math added

It's a bit simpler than Captcha's but it only took a little while to implement. RonPerrella

Let me know if there are any problems. I've noticed some wierdness now and then but I can't reproduce it.

I can. Just about any operation involving the number 7 will yield an error, whether the answer is right or not. --DMcCunney
3/27/2007 -- Alrighty then! Thanks to your insight, I believe I fixed it. By the way, thanks for posting all the updates to the site! -- RonPerrella
You do appear to have fixed it. I still think we need the concept of "authorized users", who must sign up for posting access. I've had to revert an assortment of vandalism, even *with* the math check. The math check keeps out bots, but does nothing to stop a human vandal.

You're welcome on the updates. I add more as I find them. I've also gone through and applied a standard format to all of the editor entries. I'm a big fan of standard formats and consistency.

Spammed again - more spammers banned

Thanks to Gunnar, Eric, and others, the site has been restored. I have added more spammers to my database. Maybe it's time to add Captcha's ? RonPerrella

Mined is also free software with a GNU GPL, meaning you get the source code and the right to change it. From the announcement posted on comp.editors on 2005-08-04:

"Mined is a powerful text editor with a comprehensive and easy-to-use user interface and fast, small-footprint behaviour."

"Mined provides both extensive Unicode and CJK support offering many specific features and covering special cases that other editors are not aware of (like auto-detection features and automatic handling of terminal variations, or Han character information). It was the first editor that supported Unicode in a plain-text terminal. Basically, mined is an editor tailored to reliable and efficient editing of plain text documents and programs, with features and interactive behaviour designed for this purpose."

minised 1.5 released on 2005-07-11

In 2005 Eric S. Raymond handed maintenance of his historic implementation of sed (the stream editor) over to René Rebe. minised (or just 'sed') uses a POSIX-compliant but more limited version of the GNU regular expression parser. It was compiled with dietlibc and has been updated to compile with recent versions of gcc.

minised is much smaller and a lot faster than GNU sed. The last revision benchmarked was 5.3 times faster than GNU sed linked to glibc and even 11.3 times faster when minised was linked to dietlibc (measured on the 25 (at that time) tests of the included test-suite on a 800Mhz PowerPC). Minised takes 32k on a PowerPC and only 23k on x86 architectures (statically linked to dietlibc). It fixes over 21 bugs from the previous version of (mini)sed v1.4.

wyoEditor 2.3.2 released

It supports context-sensitive help of any kind of documentation (e.g. programming framework descriptions) if provided as help files. The editor conforms to the wyoGuide guidelines using the wxWidgets framework. (posted to comp.editors on 2005-07-02)
