Before the PC, there were mini-computers like the IBM System 34, System 36, System 38 and AS-400, the Digital Equipment Corporation PDP-11 and VAX line, and the Hewlett-Packard 3000 series. Many of these machines are still in use, and text editors exist for them.
Minicomputer Editor Family
Data General:
- SAID - SED emulator for AIX, DG-UX, HP-UX Linux, and Solaris, intended for folks migrating from DG systems
- SED - Editor supplied with Data General mini computers running AOS
- SPEED - Editor for Data General mini computers running AOS
Digital Equipment Corporation:
- ADAM - Extended version of EVE
- EDIT PDP-8 - Line editor on DEC PDP-8 systems
- EDT - the predecessor to TPU (available on more than just VAX/VMS)
- EVE - an enhanced interface for Tpu
- FINE - FINE Is Not EMACS, An EMACS-like editor for TOPS-10
- IE - Interactive Editor, a screen editor written at Edinburgh Uinversity
- KED - predecessor to EDT on PDP-11 machines
- LSE - language sensitive editor - another enhanced interface for Tpu
- Scroll - Scope editor for DEC PDP-8 systems
- TECO - Tape Editor and Corrector - a line editor
- TPU - Text Processing Utility (roughly equivalent in power to Emacs)
- TYPSET - Line editor for Project MAC at MIT, running on DEC hardware
- WEVE - Wonderful EVE (an enhanced version of EVE)
- z - The Yale and Tulane Z Programmer's Editors for DEC Tops 20, VMS, Unix, Linux
- zap for UNIX - Simple open source hex editor for UNIX, VMS, MS-DOS
GEC:
Text editors:
- ECCE - Reimplementation of Edinburgh Compatible Context Editor in [Babbage] for [GEC 4000 Series], but not available outside of GEC Computers.
- EDIT - Very basic line editor, forward motion only. Commands were allegedly based on an older Elliott Brothers paper tape editor.
- GEDIT - Superset of the ICL George editor. Written by Dave Toll of Atlas Computing Centre.
- PAGE - Screen editor written by Mike John of NET-TEL Computer Systems Ltd.
- SALVE - Screen editor implementation of ECCE (also available outside GEC Computers)
- WS - Screen editor written by Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.
Text formatters:
- DOCU - Used to format the System Generation documentation
- DORMAT - Allegedly based on IBM's Format. Written by Dr A Colin Day of University College London.
- RUNOFF - Written/ported by Atlas Computing Centre.
Hewlett Packard:
- EDIT/3000 - A standard editor on HP-3000 mini-computers running MPE
- HP EDIT - A standard editor on HP-3000 mini-computers running MPE
- QEdit - A text editor for HP-3000 computers. used to be called QEdit)
Honeywell (

- FRED - Editor based on QED for GCOS8
IBM:
- CLEditor - Freeware Windows editor for the IBM AS/400 command language
- SEU - Editor for the System34, System36, System38, and AS/400 lines

- George - Text editor on ICL 1900 Series George 3 Operating System

- ED-Prime - Text editor on Prime Computer Systems running PRIMOS
