NewWord was written by WordStar programmers unhappy with the program's development, who left the company during the WordStar 3.3 days to write a compatible replacement with more features. The company that produced NewWord was later acquired by MicroPro International, the publishers of WordStar, and what had been NewWord was released as WordStar 4.0.
