TextEditors that grew out of IBM products and/or research or seem to be in some way influenced by that style of editor.
IBM Editor Family
Mainframe (s390 architecture) editors:
- ICCF - The text editor for DOS/VSE
- LEXX was an IBM editor with language sensitive features. (by Mike Cowlishaw author of REXX)
- LPEX was the next generation of language sensitive editor.
- Wylbur - The text editing component of ORVYL, a time sharing environment for the IBM mainframe developed at Stanford University
- SuperWylbur - Enhanced version of Wylbur
VM/CMS based:
- STET - "STructured Editing Tool", a folding editor for VM/CMS
- XEDIT (XeditEditor) is the standard editor on VM/(CMS|ESA) aka zVM.
- EDGAR - Predecessor of XEDIT.
MVS/zOS based:
- ISPF is IBM's flagship texteditor on zOS (formerly MVS)
AS-400:
- SEU is the text editor on AS/400 machines. Essential tool in that OS.
Unix:
- JERED is a clone of E for Unix-like operating systems.
- TDE - Thomson-Davis Editor (public domain, DOS, Windows, Linux)
- uni-SPF is an SPF clone for Unix
- uni-Xedit is a clone of Xedit for Unix
- X2 is an open source non-IBM developed editor that has the same feel (DOS, Windows, Linux, BSD, Unix)
- Hybrid Editor XE is a free, open source, multiplatform ISPF clone
Other architectures:
- cse- (Colorado State Editor) has that E look and feel. Also a tiny editor, at < 20K
- E2 - Second major version of IBM's PC-DOS E editor
- E3 IBM is an IBM internal editor often called "E". It was available on OS/2, PCDOS, and AIX.
- EPM was E for Presentation Manager (the GUI on IBM OS/2).
- Hybrid Editor XE is a free, open source, multiplatform ISPF clone
- IbmProfessionalEdit - An IBM text editor for MS-DOS
- KEDIT is a shareware clone of XEDIT for PC.
- Pc XEDIT - Freeware Windows clone of VM XEDIT
- pcedit32 was an "E" clone.
- Sedit is a shareware SPF clone for Windows and Unix
- SlickEdit has a similar feel to E3, it is a text (not GUI) editor on multiple platforms.
- SPFLite is a shareware SPF clone for Windows
- SPFSE - CommandTechnology's commercial ISPF clone for PCs
- THE is an open souirce clone of both XEDIT and KEDIT for PC and UNIX.
- Tritus TSPF was a clone of SPF. (no longer available but well loved by those who have it.)
- T - Tim Baldwin's freeware tiny editor for OS/2 and MS-DOS, similar to "E"
- VisualSlickEdit has a similar feel to SlickEdit but is a GUI and on multiple platforms.
- XeditForJava is a clone of XEDIT but not complete. It is intended to function as a Java Applet.
These include PageMode editors like IspfPdf? and XeditEditor.
Also includes editors that inherit from the E editor family, like EPM (the enhanced graphical editor on OS/2) and the E editor on PCDOS. VisualSlickEdit and SlickEdit both have compatible KeyboardLayouts.
